Blog 30: Week of 06/19/22

What a week. Been busy so there’s plenty to write about today. It might take a while to write and publish this one because I have to leave for the airport before too long. Two main things this past week; 1 - I went to camp to help with Angel Tree and, 2 - I am currently in Utah with my friends.

So let’s start. Monday morning I woke up around 6:00 so I could get on the road out to Frontier Camp. This week was their Angel Tree week, which is where we get sponsors to help pay for children who’s do not have a father to come to camp. Most of these kids are from inner city Houston and Dallas. They carry with them a lot of baggage and are always slow to allow camp to be fun. The past two years as the Program Director I realized my favorite part of the job was getting to talk to kids that were acting out. Angel Tree week always has kids that act out because they are not used to being around so many kids in the Texas heat. We have tons of fun, but tensions get high around their cabinmates. My job this week is what we call “Fire Team.” My only responsibility was to help put out fires so that the counselors can focus on their entire cabin while I work with the one or two. The start of the week was pretty calm so I was able to form some good connections with campers that I could tell were going to cause problems. As the week went on a couple more things happened each day and I spent a lot more time distinguishing fires and getting kids back into the program. It was also really interesting seeing camp run by someone else after two summers in a row of me being in charge. There were multiple times I just wanted to jump into the program and help out but that was not my place. Wednesday I had to leave around 11:00 at night because I had a flight the next day.

I did my laundry, repacked, and then went off to the airport with my dad and Andy. We got there with enough time to wait a bit, but then our flight was delayed not once, but twice. So we ended up sitting at the airport for about 4 hours, which is nothing compared to Donovan. Donovan landed in Salt Lake City at 9:30 am and we did not get there till 10:30. So Donovan sat in the airport alone for over 12 hours. Very funny. If you knew Donovan you would be laughing too. We then waited just a little bit more to wait for Garrett to land out of LA. After we were all here we drove to the house. I think we hung out for a little while but then went to sleep. Friday we woke up and headed into Park City to explore the town as well as get groceries. We walked their main street which is built for tourism and spent a couple bucks here and there. We went into a fun cowboy shop and tried on hats, the worker did not appreciate us trying on hats and followed us around the store so that we would not break something. We did not break anything. We then got lunch and spent too much money on fish and chips. We then went out to the grocery store which is where we re-ran into the guy from cowboy store, he was truly stalking us. When we got back home we just hung out. I think I wrote a script for a show idea, then I made spaghetti. Andy made us Manhattans. It was a lovely meal. We then went hot tubbing. The hot tub was nice, but we couldn’t stay in there forever because it was chlorine. We finished the night with a movie called “The Horse Dancer.” I did not finish the movie as I was pretty tired. In the middle of the movie though, Donovan claimed “He HAD to show us something” and then pulled up Home Depot Anime Song which was absolutely hilarious that we paused a movie for some lame song. On Saturday we woke up slowly and kinda hung out as the day went on. Eventually went went out and explored around our little area. We found a cornhole setup and played that for like an hour. It was perfect weather. I don’t know how every time I play cornhole it’s just perfect weather. It’s kinda hard to remember what all we did every day. We ordered pizza for dinner and watched videos as we ate. Then we watched Marbula One. That took about an hour. Then Donovan sat on the phone for an hour arguing about Star Wars. We finished the day with the Hot Tub and then a movie “Dwegons and Leprechauns” This movie was terrifying, not because it was a horror, but because of the animation style. I fell asleep in the middle of it again. Sunday we woke up pretty early. We played Liar’s Dice, which was pretty fun. Then we went out to a hike. We ended up hiking for 3.5 hours and 9 miles. We gained over 1,000 elevation. It was a real nice hike, but it was long. The views were so pretty. We left and the guys all wanted ice cream so we got ice cream then went home. I took a shower then cooked us all Steaks. They turned out pretty good, but they didn’t have a sear on them because I grilled them instead of pan frying. After dinner we filmed a couple videos; a feature section, and two tiktoks. They will be uploaded eventually. After filming we finished the night in the hot tub, but I was super tired. Now today I woke up and cooked us breakfast. I then wrote a skit for this week and then wrote this blog. It’s now almost 1:00 so I’m going to eat lunch and then head to the airport. I think that’s about all that happened.

Alright, I’ll be back in waco soon. Bye bye Utah.
