Blog 27: Best of New York
So I wanted to try something new here as I have come to a close with a big chapter in my life. In fact as I am typing this I realizing I should do one of these “Best of” blogs for my college career. But that will take a lot of reflection and remembering. Anyway, for this one I am going to share my favorite memories, experiences, and little things from New York. It is also going to be a much different layout from normal and I am sure you will be able to understand how it works. So, here presents; Best of: New York.
The Little Things
I love walking into the subway station right as the train is showing up. You meet it in its place, walk on and go. I love hearing snippets of other people’s conversations as I walk past them - “and there are reports of me doing a backflip, I don’t even know HOW to do a backflip.” “A BaCkfLip??” I love it when there a good performer in Central Park or when a violinist plays in the subway stations. I love getting off one train and immediately making my connecting train, it’s like the entire city is running for me, on my schedule. I love the New York skyline at night, walking down the Hoboken riverside looking at the city specifically. I love when I don’t lose my service on the subway and can still use my phone. I love when the walk signs line up perfectly to my pace. I love it when I get a seat on a long subway ride. I love holding my groceries as the subway roars past me to a stop, I feel like a painting or a movie. I love finally walking past the slow people in front of me on the subway, it’s like a gasp of fresh air, emerging from holding your breath under water. I love when I am crossing the street and can look all the way down the street, seeing the buildings line the street, the cars forming traffic at each light, the people swarming the sidewalks. Right there in the middle of the street is special, it’s quiet, it’s empty when everything else is packed. I love it when the subway trains race each other, you get to look into the other car as it goes the same speed as you — knowing they are looking back at you. In between the cars the supports fly past causing a film roll type of view of the unobtainable passengers. I love seeing spots I recognize in movies, or spots from movies that I saw in real life. So much culture and entertainment happened right there.
Favorite Moments
I loved when Carson was in town and we went to Mable’s Smokehouse, that was the best food I had the entire time and I got to eat it with Carson. I loved going to the Mets game and yelling at the umpire. I yelled something and the rest of the fans laughed with me, it was great, a community. I loved playing board games late at night and then going to the Court Square Diner. I was undefeated in BEANS in New York. I loved watching Come From Away and how happy I felt afterwards. I loved standing in the middle of Times Square at midnight and seeing the advertisements turn to a single color and the entire place being so calm. I really enjoyed watching the Oscars and being the only one to predict CODA winning best picture. I loved getting to talk to Jimmy Fallon and having everyone talk about it, everyone said they knew it would happen even though nothing really happened. I loved walking across Manhattan all the way down Broadway, yes it hurt my feet, but it was so cool. I know this might not count, but it’s my blog so oh well; I loved the day of Jacob’s wedding. The weather was so perfect and the laughs were great.
I am sure there are many many more, and perhaps I will update this as I remember them, but this is my list for now. Life was interesting and there were many great days in New York. I did really love New York and I would enjoy staying there longer, but it is not in the cards at the moment.
